The Saskatoon Teachers' Association belongs to all of us, and this is what makes us powerful. The leaders who have come before us, and who continue to work on our behalf, have already done a tremendous amount of good for us. An STA that is big, open, and transparent is a powerful STA, and now that we have done that groundwork, we can move on to the next step, which is organizing our members to fight for our classrooms, our working conditions, and our quality of life.
One STA President and 24 STA Executive members can run the day-to-day requirements of an organization like the STA. 4000 teachers can transform the day-to-day experiences of the members of the STA. Being big doesn't mean 4000 teachers in one room together. It means building a network of trusted relationships in our buildings, working together to understand our common or unique needs, and then, confident in our collective understanding and trust, pushing for change in our schools and communities.
As STA President, I will continue work with our Executive, our SSRs, and our members to build our power, our engagement, our buy-in, and work to get us to majority support on your most important issues. . With big involvement and big buy-in, we can get to big power. Click here to learn more about my plan to organize our members.
The power of collectivity can only be leveraged if that collective, meaning all of the people who make it up, is welcome in all parts of the STA, always. Teachers are resourceful, brave, and infinitely creative. Let's not squander this richness of human resources.
As STA President, I will continue support the opening up planning of convention, LINC bargaining, and any other matter of interest to members. We have already taken great strides by refocussing convention on the talents and skillsets of our members, and our LINC teams are doing amazing work with working committees and open communication with members. I will continue to champion a model of participation that values whatever you can contribute. If you can't commit to joining the Convention Planning Committee for the whole year, but you have questions, concerns, or ideas, you are welcome to attend one meeting, all of them, or anything in between. We will meet you where you are, because being burnt-out and busy with life shouldn't exclude you from participating in the STA.
This move to this model of openness has been exciting to experience over the past two years, and I have been amazed at the talented members who have stepped up to build their STA. I will continue to advocate for and strengthen an STA where all members have multiple, ongoing opportunities to contribute their concerns, their ideas, and their solutions.
It is infinitely easier to buy into and support an organization and the people who lead it if you know what they are doing, and why. When an organization is big and open, it naturally follows that it will be transparent, but it still bears stating.
As STA President, I will continue to ensure that my work as President is transparent, with President Reports delivered at both the Executive Meetings and the Assembly Meetings on how I have been working for and with teachers.
I will continue to support our new model which requires Committee Chairs to also report their work and spending.
I will continue to support our PR team in maintaining an active website and social media to ensure that teachers can easily find the information that they need.
